Carbon Steel for Process Skid Frames: A Procurement Guide
Carbon steel for process skid frames is purchased as plate, channels, beams and angles that fabricators turn into equipment bases, crossmembers, mounting plates and supports. These structures carry pumps, filters, dosing equipment and other packaged systems used in oil, gas and chemical plants.
For a skid builder, the purchasing challenge is getting every steel item to the fabrication shop with the correct dimensions, material identity and delivery sequence. A quotation that specifies only “mild steel for a skid” leaves important questions unresolved: which component, which grade, which drawing revision and which acceptance requirements?
This guide explains how equipment manufacturers and project buyers can define a structural steel package before requesting prices.
Which Process Skid Components Use Carbon Steel?
A process skid combines equipment on a transportable support structure. Its frame material is selected separately from the materials that contact the process fluid. Depending on the approved design, carbon steel plate and sections may be used in the following assemblies.
| Equipment package | Potential steel components | Drawing details to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Pump and transfer skid | Longitudinal rails, crossmembers, pump and motor mounting plates | Support positions, mounting surfaces, hole locations and alignment requirements |
| Chemical dosing or injection skid | Base frame, equipment brackets and instrument supports | Equipment layout, maintenance access and protection against the specified exposure |
| Filtration or separation package | Support beams, baseplates and connection gussets | Vessel support interfaces, operating weight and required load cases |
| Lubrication or utility package | Equipment base, pipe-support brackets and access supports | Connection details, clearance and assembly dimensions |
JUDE Steel lists carbon and alloy steel plate and carbon steel profiles. Use these product categories to identify the material forms in your bill of materials, then request confirmation of the exact grade, size and supply condition.
Specify the Steel Grade for Each Component
ASTM A36/A36M covers structural carbon steel plate, shapes and bars. It may be specified for frame components where the approved design permits it. The grade name does not establish the load capacity of a finished skid. See the ASTM A36/A36M specification scope.
ASTM A572/A572M Grade 50 is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel option. Confirm the permitted product dimensions, required properties and project requirements before ordering. When notch toughness matters, the purchasing specification needs to address it explicitly. See the ASTM A572/A572M specification scope and JUDE’s A572 steel plate product page.
For drawings that specify an EN, JIS or GB material, retain the complete designation and required delivery condition in the enquiry. Similar strength levels do not establish equivalence between standards. Submit proposed alternatives to the responsible engineer before purchasing.
Keep structural and pressure-containing materials separate. A frame grade is not automatically acceptable for the vessel shell, process pipe or pressure-retaining fittings mounted on it. For example, ASTM A516/A516M addresses carbon steel pressure-vessel plate. Pressure-containing parts require their own material selection under the applicable equipment code and service conditions.
Resolve Four Drawing Details Before Releasing the Order
1. Strength, stiffness and equipment alignment
Increasing yield strength does not produce a corresponding increase in elastic stiffness. A higher-strength grade alone will not necessarily correct frame deflection or vibration. The designer must consider section geometry, connections, support conditions and equipment loads, including relevant transport and lifting cases.
2. Mill tolerances and finished assembly tolerances
The permitted variation in a delivered plate is different from the flatness required across finished pump mounting pads. Specify raw material dimensions and fabrication acceptance criteria separately. For ASTM structural products, check the applicable product specification and referenced ASTM A6/A6M requirements using the editions required by the purchase order.
Define whether mounting plates are supplied as raw blanks or machined parts, and identify the required machining allowance. Hole position, frame diagonals and mounting-pad coplanarity belong on the fabrication drawings.
3. Welding, lifting points and temperature requirements
Confirm welding procedure requirements before material release. Lifting lugs and their attachment areas need a specific engineering review; a plate designation alone is insufficient. Where impact testing is required, state the test temperature, acceptance criteria and sampling requirements. Do not infer a minimum operating temperature solely from a steel grade name.
4. Surface condition and coating responsibility
State whether the order covers bare steel, prepared surfaces or an agreed coating system. Identify weld areas, machined surfaces and contact faces that need masking or later treatment. The coating specification should reflect the actual environment, including any chemical splashes, and identify who completes repairs after fabrication.
Keep Material Identity Through the Supply Chain
The steel mill provides material identification and test documentation. The stockholder or processor maintains that identity when allocating material and preparing cut pieces. The fabricator links the received steel to component numbers, and the skid builder incorporates the accepted parts into the equipment package.
Agree on the identification method before cutting. Where required by the project, a cutting map and transferred identification should connect each component to its parent plate or section and the corresponding certificate. An unmarked cut part accompanied by an unrelated certificate does not establish traceability.
Make the document handover part of the order. For certificate review, use JUDE’s guide to reading a carbon steel mill test certificate.
What to Include in a Process Skid Steel RFQ
Send a line-by-line bill of materials rather than a single estimated tonnage. Separate plate items from rolled sections so that dimensions, quantities and delivery requirements can be checked individually.
| RFQ item | Buyer information |
|---|---|
| Project and revision | Skid tag, drawing number, revision, component references and quantity of identical skids |
| Material | Standard, edition, complete grade, delivery condition and any mill or origin restrictions |
| Plate and sections | Plate thickness, width and length; section designation or dimensioned cross-section; length and piece count |
| Processing scope | Stock lengths or cut parts; cutting tolerances, holes, bevels, machining allowances and part marking |
| Acceptance | Certificate requirements, traceability, supplementary tests, dimensional checks and inspection hold points |
| Surface and delivery | Surface condition, packing limits, required arrival date, destination, and requested Incoterms rule with named place |
Compare the Complete Material Package
Evaluate the amount payable for usable material delivered to the agreed location. A lower price per tonne may exclude cutting, testing, marking, packing or transport. Confirm whether the commercial weight is actual or calculated, how cutting waste is charged, and whether a minimum order applies to each size.
Ask suppliers to identify available stock, items requiring mill production, proposed substitutions and exclusions separately. Schedule deliveries around the fabrication sequence: main rails and crossmembers may be needed before brackets and mounting plates. Any split shipment should include identification and documents for the material it contains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Must every steel component come from the same heat?
Not generally. Different sizes and grades may come from different heats. Unless the project requires otherwise, the important acceptance points are that each item satisfies its specification and remains linked to the correct material documentation.
Can certified plate remnants be used for small brackets?
Potentially, if the project permits them. Confirm material identity, certificate traceability, dimensions and surface condition, along with any orientation or testing requirements. An unidentified remnant should not be accepted solely because its thickness matches the drawing.
Can I request a budget price before the drawings are final?
Yes. Mark the enquiry as preliminary and provide the current material list, assumed grades and estimated quantities. Ask the supplier to list pricing assumptions and validity. Release the purchase order against approved specifications and the correct drawing revision.
