GOST 20 and 45 Steel Bars for Russian Machinery Parts

GOST 20 and 45 Steel Bars for Russian Machinery Parts

When a Russian machinery drawing specifies steel 20 or 45, the
purchasing task starts with the complete material callout. The grade,
governing standard, drawing revision and required condition must stay
connected as the order moves from a maintenance team to a steel
supplier and then to a machine shop.

This guide covers carbon steel round bar and blanks for
coupling hubs, adapter flanges, bushings, sleeves and spacer
rings
where the approved design specifies these materials.
It explains how to turn the drawing into a quotation that can be
checked before cutting begins.

What Does a GOST 20 or 45 Material Callout Mean?

The grade number alone is incomplete.
GOST 1050-2013 covers specified non-alloy structural steel products,
including hot-rolled, forged, calibrated and specially
surface-finished products. Rosstandart lists it as active and
identifies GOST 1050-88 as a replaced standard. Its scope extends
to certain other product forms only for chemical composition
requirements; it should not be treated as a complete product
specification for every item made from these steels.

Check the

official GOST 1050-2013 record
,
then confirm the contract edition, applicable corrections and any
additional requirements with the drawing owner.

Selected chemistry information for identifying the two grades
Grade under GOST 1050-2013 Carbon, mass % Material family
20 0.17–0.24 Low-carbon steel
45 0.42–0.50 Medium-carbon steel

These published composition ranges appear in

MMK-METIZ’s GOST 1050-2013 product data
.
They are neither typical heat-analysis results nor a complete
chemical specification. Review all required elements, the analysis
basis and any permitted deviations under the agreed standard.

Do not approve a substitution from matching numbers alone. A Chinese
grade 45 designation, SAE 1045 or an EN C45 designation does not
establish compliance with a GOST 45 purchase order. Any proposed
alternative needs a documented comparison of the relevant
requirements and approval from the responsible engineer.

Which Machinery Products Can Start with Carbon Steel Bar?

The examples below describe purchasing situations for parts whose
material has already been approved. A component name cannot
determine whether grade 20, grade 45 or another material is suitable.

Coupling Hubs and Adapter Flanges

A hub machined from round bar needs enough stock for its largest
outside diameter and for facing both ends. Include the drawing’s
bore, keyway, shoulder and heat-treatment requirements when the
processor reviews the blank. If the original design requires a
forging, obtain approval before offering a slice of rolled bar
instead.

For repeat orders, identify each blank by part number and drawing
revision. Similar-looking hubs may have different material or final
hardness requirements and should remain separate order lines.

Bushings and Sleeves

For a sleeve machined from solid bar, the bore affects material
removal and machining cost. A tube or hollow forging may offer a
different production route, but that change requires a separate
review of product specification, dimensions and acceptance
requirements.

Where the drawing requires a hardened working surface, specify the
treatment and inspection responsibility. An incoming bar certificate
does not verify the hardness, case depth or dimensions of a
subsequently treated sleeve.

Spacer Rings and Retaining Collars

These relatively simple parts still need defined stock and cutting
requirements. Separate the finished ring thickness from the
purchased blank length, and specify any required allowance for
facing. Agree how identification will be maintained when one long
bar is cut into many small pieces.

scope and documentation should be confirmed against the actual order.

Choose the Purchasing Scope Before Comparing Prices

A workshop buying full-length bar and a plant buying individual hub
blanks are purchasing different deliverables. Ask suppliers to
state which operations their quotation includes.

  • Full-length bar:
confirm the nominal size, tolerances, length basis, surface
condition and quantity. The receiving workshop controls cutting
    and subsequent identification.
  • Sawn blanks:
add the piece count, cut-length tolerance, end condition and
    marking or batch-label arrangement.
  • Rough-machined blanks:
provide a separate blank drawing with remaining machining
allowances and agreed inspection points. Request confirmation
    that this processing is available.

For quotation comparison, ask whether the charge is based on ordered
mass, delivered mass or accepted pieces. Identify cutting,
inspection, packaging and any agreed processing charges separately.
This makes the cost of producing the required quantity easier to
assess.

Keep Incoming-Bar and Finished-Part Acceptance Separate

Specify the bar’s manufacturing route and delivery condition
explicitly. MMK-METIZ, for example, publishes different
mechanical-property requirements for work-hardened and annealed
calibrated products of the same grade. Those tables cannot be
applied indiscriminately to every product size, route or condition.

A useful inspection plan identifies three stages:

  1. Material receipt:
check the ordered standard and grade, certificate, heat
identification, dimensions, condition and required material test
    results.
  2. Blank release:
check cut or rough-machined dimensions and preserve the link to
    the original material records.
  3. Finished-part release:
verify the drawing’s final dimensions and any specified hardness,
surface treatment or other component requirements after processing.

JUDE’s

mill test certificate guide

explains how to connect material records to the delivered steel.
A bar MTC is one part of the manufacturing record; downstream
operations may require additional inspection reports.

For outdoor equipment in Russia, state the minimum design
temperature and any required impact-test criteria. Country of
destination and grade number alone do not demonstrate suitability
for a particular cold-service duty. If ultrasonic testing is
required, agree the method, coverage and acceptance criteria in
addition to the mandatory requirements of the ordered specification.

Build an RFQ from the Russian Drawing

Attach the original material note alongside any English translation.
Retain the complete grade designation, standard number and revision
so that abbreviations or suffixes are not lost during quotation.

Use one line per part or stock size, with the following information:

  • Part identification:
component name, part number and current drawing revision.
  • Material:
exact grade, governing standard and edition, additional
requirements and approved alternatives, if any.
  • Supply scope:
full-length bar, sawn blanks or an expressly agreed processed
    condition.
  • Dimensions:
    approved stock or blank size, tolerances and allowances;
distinguish these from final component dimensions.
  • Quantity:
pieces or mass for each line, plus repeat-order quantities if
    relevant.
  • Acceptance:
required delivery condition, document type, material tests,
    identification and inspection responsibilities.
  • Delivery:
destination city, required date, packaging and quotation delivery
    terms.

If the drawing gives only finished dimensions, have the machining
supplier approve the starting stock size. The steel supplier should
not have to infer machining allowance or an unspecified
heat-treatment requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a GOST designation mean the steel was manufactured in Russia?

No. A standard designation identifies specified requirements; it does
not establish country of manufacture. Ask for the actual manufacturer
and the origin documentation required by your purchase contract.

What if the equipment drawing still specifies GOST 1050-88?

Send the original callout with the inquiry and request clarification
from the drawing owner. The existence of a newer standard does not
authorize a supplier to change an approved drawing. Record the
accepted edition and any approved substitution in the purchase
documentation.

Can a worn sample replace a material specification?

A sample can help establish geometry, but appearance and a partial
stamp cannot confirm the original material specification or
heat-treatment history. Obtain the original drawing or arrange an
engineering assessment before approving replacement stock.

Can several diameters and grades be included in one inquiry?

Yes. Use a separate line for each combination of grade, diameter,
length and condition. Request a line-by-line response showing
availability, quantity basis, documentation and any proposed
deviation.
