Carbon Steel for Compressed Air Receiver Manufacturing: Tank Shells, Dished Heads & Nozzle Plates

Industrial Manufacturing Guide | November 2, 2026 | Pressure Vessel Steel Plate and Component Blanks for International Equipment OEMs

Compressed air receiver tanks are used in industrial compressed air systems to provide temporary air storage, reduce pressure fluctuations and support the operation of compressors and downstream equipment.

For tank manufacturers, the steel purchasing process involves more than selecting a carbon steel plate by thickness.

A receiver may contain a rolled cylindrical shell, formed dished heads, nozzle reinforcement plates, supports and other fabricated components. Different parts can require different material specifications and inspections.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 is one steel grade that may be specified for certain pressure-vessel components. However, its suitability depends on the approved design, material specification, temperature, fabrication requirements and applicable construction code.

This guide explains the carbon steel supply chain behind compressed air receiver manufacturing and provides a practical raw-material purchasing checklist for pressure-vessel OEMs.

1. What Is a Compressed Air Receiver Tank?

An air receiver is a vessel used to store compressed air within a pneumatic system.

Depending on the installation, a receiver may be located before or after air treatment equipment.

Wet receivers can provide storage and support moisture separation upstream of a dryer. Dry receivers can provide air storage downstream of suitable treatment equipment.

Industrial air receiver systems may include:

  • Vertical or horizontal pressure vessel bodies.
  • Cylindrical steel shells.
  • Formed vessel heads.
  • Air inlet and outlet connections.
  • Pressure gauge and relief-device connections.
  • Condensate drainage connections.
  • Support legs, saddles or mounting structures.

The final arrangement depends on the approved pressure-vessel design.

Atlas Copco and Kaeser publish technical information describing compressed air receivers and their roles in pressure stabilization, air storage and condensate management.

2. Carbon Steel Products Used in Air Receiver Manufacturing

A compressed air receiver can require several distinct steel product forms.

Pressure-containing shell and head materials must be distinguished from non-pressure structural components.

Component Potential Raw Material Key Purchasing Requirement
Cylindrical tank shell Approved pressure-vessel steel plate Grade, standard, thickness, rolling and inspection
Dished head blank Specified pressure-vessel plate Blank dimensions, forming, heat treatment and final thickness
Nozzle reinforcement plate Code-approved plate material Design material, dimensions, opening geometry and traceability
Pressure connection Approved pipe, forging or other pressure-part material Product standard, dimensions, pressure design and inspection
Support leg or saddle Approved structural steel plate or profile Loads, dimensions, connections and corrosion protection
Mounting or base plate Specified structural steel plate Grade, thickness, holes and structural requirements
Replacement plate blank Design-approved steel plate Drawing revision, material identity and quantity

This is an illustrative material list, not the approved bill of materials of a specific air receiver.

Pressure-retaining components must be manufactured using materials and methods permitted by the applicable design code.

3. ASTM A516 Grade 70 for Tank Shells and Heads

ASTM A516/A516M covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important.

The specification includes Grades 55, 60, 65 and 70, representing different strength levels.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 may be specified for selected compressed air receiver shells and head blanks when the engineering design permits it.

Why the Complete Specification Matters

Ordering only “A516 Grade 70 steel plate” may omit information necessary for the intended pressure-vessel application.

The buyer should confirm:

  • Applicable ASTM or ASME material specification and edition.
  • Required grade and material product form.
  • Nominal plate thickness and allowed tolerance.
  • Required plate width and length.
  • Heat-treatment and delivery condition.
  • Specified mechanical and impact-testing requirements.
  • Required supplementary examinations.
  • Mill test certificates and material traceability.

The required normalizing condition, impact testing and supplementary examinations must follow the actual specification, thickness and approved vessel design.

No particular impact-test temperature or guaranteed service temperature should be assumed from the grade name alone.

Standard reference: ASTM A516/A516M-25 – Carbon Steel Pressure Vessel Plate.

4. ASTM A516 vs ASTM A36: Pressure Parts and Supports

ASTM A516 and ASTM A36 are not interchangeable material specifications.

ASTM A36/A36M covers carbon structural steel products for specified structural uses.

It may be relevant to certain non-pressure support legs, brackets or base plates when approved by the vessel designer.

However, an ordinary ASTM A36 plate should not automatically be substituted for an approved pressure-vessel shell or head material.

Material Main Specification Scope Potential Receiver Application
ASTM A516 Grade 70 Specified carbon steel pressure-vessel plate Approved shell or head blank
ASTM A36 Carbon structural steel Approved non-pressure supports and brackets
EN P265GH Specified pressure-purpose steel under EN 10028-2 Approved European-standard vessel plate

P265GH and A516 Grade 70 must not be treated as automatically equivalent. Their material properties, delivery conditions and acceptance requirements must be reviewed separately.

Substitution between material specifications requires approval by the responsible design authority.

5. EN 10028-2 and European Pressure Vessel Plate

International air receiver manufacturers may work with ASTM, ASME or European material specifications, depending on the destination market and governing equipment rules.

EN 10028-2:2017 covers specified non-alloy and alloy steel flat products for pressure purposes with elevated-temperature properties.

P265GH is one of the commonly referenced grades within this material family.

For European projects, the purchasing team should verify the applicable material standard, grade, required inspection documents and the pressure-equipment regulatory framework.

The steel plate’s compliance with EN 10028-2 does not independently establish conformity of the complete pressure vessel to applicable legislation.

Reference: BS EN 10028-2:2017 – Steel Flat Products for Pressure Purposes.

6. Dished Head Blanks: Forming and Final Thickness

Air receiver manufacturers may form pressure-vessel heads from approved steel plate blanks.

Head geometry can vary according to the selected design and construction code.

The starting plate thickness and blank dimensions must allow for the approved forming method and required finished dimensions.

Important Manufacturing Checks

  • Initial plate material specification and condition.
  • Approved head drawing and blank geometry.
  • Forming method and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Any applicable thinning allowance.
  • Minimum required finished thickness.
  • Required post-forming heat treatment, if applicable.
  • Material identification and examination requirements.

A plate that satisfies its incoming material specification does not automatically qualify the completed formed head.

The head manufacturer must perform the required fabrication and acceptance checks.

7. Welded Shells, Nozzle Plates and Pressure Vessel Compliance

Rolled shell plates may be welded into cylindrical assemblies according to an approved manufacturing procedure.

Nozzle openings and reinforcement components require additional engineering attention because they affect the pressure boundary and local stresses.

Requirements for welding, forming, nondestructive examination and pressure testing depend on the applicable construction code.

ASME Section VIII Division 1

ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 contains rules addressing relevant pressure-vessel design, fabrication, inspection, testing and certification.

Where the project requires ASME construction, the equipment manufacturer must follow the applicable code provisions and authorized certification process.

Raw steel certification is not a substitute for completed vessel compliance.

Official reference: ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1.

Engineering distinction: A mill test certificate confirms applicable raw-material characteristics. It does not establish the pressure rating, welding qualification, hydrostatic-test acceptance, pressure-relief protection or ASME certification of a finished air receiver.

8. Condensate Corrosion and Carbon Steel Air Receivers

Compressed air systems can generate condensate as moisture separates from the compressed air.

If water accumulates inside a carbon steel receiver, internal corrosion may become a concern.

The degree of corrosion risk depends on the operating environment, compressed air quality, drainage, material condition and maintenance.

Protective coatings or alternative materials may be specified for certain equipment designs.

However, an internal coating must be approved for the actual pressure-vessel service, and coating selection does not replace appropriate vessel design or inspection.

Condensate drainage and pressure-relief arrangements must also follow the approved equipment requirements.

Air receiver maintenance and moisture management are explained in Kaeser’s Air Receiver Technical Guide.

9. Material Inspection and Traceability

Pressure-vessel fabricators should agree on material documentation and inspection before steel purchasing.

Relevant incoming checks can include:

  • Verification of material grade and product standard.
  • Review of heat number and mill test certificate.
  • Thickness and dimensional inspection.
  • Confirmation of heat-treatment condition.
  • Review of specified mechanical and impact tests.
  • Supplementary examination records where required.
  • Material identification transfer after cutting.
  • Verification of the approved component drawing.

For ASTM pressure-vessel plate purchasing, ASTM A20/A20M provides general requirements applicable to specified pressure-vessel plate products.

Supplementary requirements must be identified in the order where applicable rather than assumed automatically.
