Diesel generator enclosures protect generating sets from selected environmental conditions while providing access for operation and maintenance. Some designs also incorporate acoustic panels and ventilation systems to control noise and airflow.
For enclosure manufacturers, galvanized carbon steel sheet, cold-rolled steel and structural steel plate may be used for different components.
The material specification depends on the canopy design, corrosion exposure, forming requirements and structural loading.
This guide explains how steel raw materials enter diesel generator canopy manufacturing and what overseas equipment OEMs should include in a purchasing enquiry.

1. What Is a Diesel Generator Canopy?
A diesel generator canopy is a protective enclosure installed around a generator set.
Depending on the application, it may provide weather protection, security, service access and acoustic treatment.
Generator enclosure designs commonly include:
- Outer roof and side panels.
- Ventilation louvers and air openings.
- Maintenance and access doors.
- Perforated acoustic-panel liners.
- Internal support and reinforcement members.
- Mounting brackets and base-frame components.
- Approved drainage or fluid-containment accessories.
These components do not all require the same steel grade or thickness.
Equipment manufacturer Caterpillar publishes generator enclosure specifications describing galvanized steel construction, corrosion-resistant finishes, access doors and ventilation-related features.
Industry reference: Caterpillar – Sound Attenuated Generator Enclosures.
The referenced equipment demonstrates a genuine manufacturing application and does not imply a commercial relationship with JUDE.
2. Which Generator Enclosure Components Use Carbon Steel?
A generator canopy manufacturer may purchase different flat and structural steel products for a single enclosure.
| Component | Potential Raw Material | Key Purchasing Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Roof and side panels | Approved galvanized or coated carbon steel sheet | Grade, thickness, coating, profile and dimensions |
| Ventilation louvers | Formable galvanized steel sheet | Blade geometry, forming and edge condition |
| Access doors | Galvanized or cold-rolled steel sheet | Flatness, hinges, openings and surface finish |
| Perforated acoustic liner | Specified perforated steel sheet | Hole pattern, open area, finish and drawing |
| Panel reinforcement | Approved formed sheet or structural section | Strength, section geometry and joining |
| Base-frame mounting plate | Design-approved structural carbon steel plate | Grade, thickness, loads and hole locations |
| Drip or collection tray | Specified metal sheet or fabricated component | Geometry, fluid compatibility, joining and sealing |
The table is an illustrative purchasing guide. It does not replace the certified material schedule of a generator manufacturer.
Some enclosures incorporate aluminum, stainless steel, insulated composite panels or other materials where the design requires them.
3. Galvanized Steel Sheet for Canopy Panels
Hot-dip galvanized steel sheet is a potential material for generator canopy outer panels, access doors and certain ventilation components.
Its zinc coating provides corrosion protection under suitable environmental conditions.
However, a galvanized steel designation alone does not establish the mechanical performance, weather resistance or service life of the finished enclosure.
ASTM A653/A653M
ASTM A653/A653M-25a covers specified hot-dip zinc-coated and zinc-iron alloy-coated steel sheet in coils and cut lengths.
Different substrate designations are available, including commercial and forming steels as well as structural categories.
For canopy components requiring bending, punching or roll forming, the buyer should specify a steel designation that meets the approved forming requirements.
The purchaser should confirm:
- Complete material standard and edition.
- Steel substrate category and grade.
- Zinc or zinc-iron coating type and designation.
- Nominal thickness and permitted tolerance.
- Coil or sheet dimensions.
- Surface treatment and packaging requirements.
Official standard: ASTM A653/A653M-25a – Galvanized Steel Sheet.
Does a Heavier Zinc Coating Guarantee Longer Life?
No fixed service life can be guaranteed solely from the coating designation.
Actual corrosion performance depends on exposure conditions, coating continuity, fabrication damage, drainage, maintenance and any additional surface protection.
For products using powder coating or other finishes, compatibility with the galvanized substrate and surface preparation must be confirmed.
4. Cold-Rolled Steel for Formed Enclosure Parts
Some enclosure manufacturers use uncoated cold-rolled steel sheet for formed components that receive an approved protective coating after fabrication.
Possible applications include selected access panels, internal brackets and non-pressure sheet-metal covers.
ASTM A1008/A1008M-26 covers several specified cold-rolled steel sheet categories, including commercial, drawing and structural steel.
These categories have different requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable.
A commercial-quality cold-rolled sheet does not automatically meet the strength requirements of a structural component.
Likewise, a material certificate does not prove that a fabricated door or enclosure has passed any required functional test.
Official standard: ASTM A1008/A1008M-26 – Cold-Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet.
5. Structural Steel Plate for Generator Base Frames
Generator sets require an approved supporting structure capable of accommodating the relevant equipment weight, operational forces and installation conditions.
Base-frame plates and support members may use structural carbon steel where the design permits.
ASTM A36/A36M is a structural steel specification that can be relevant to selected approved plates and support components.
However, ASTM A36 should not be used as a universal designation for all generator mounting parts.
Structural calculations, geometry, connections, corrosion protection and lifting arrangements remain the responsibility of the equipment designer.
Official standard: ASTM A36/A36M-19 – Carbon Structural Steel.
6. Fabrication: Louvers, Doors and Acoustic Panels
Ventilation Louvers
Generator cooling and combustion-air requirements influence louver geometry and airflow arrangements.
For sheet-metal purchasing, manufacturers should provide the approved louver blank drawing, material thickness, opening geometry, bend requirements and surface specification.
Steel grade and forming quality alone cannot guarantee sufficient cooling airflow or rain protection.
Access Doors
Canopy doors may require accurately located hinge openings, fastening points, seals and maintenance clearances.
Material flatness, punching quality, formed dimensions and coating condition should be controlled according to the approved drawing.
Perforated Acoustic Liners
Some sound-attenuating enclosures use perforated metal liners with separate acoustic absorption materials.
The perforated sheet supports the approved acoustic assembly but does not independently determine its noise-reduction performance.
Hole size, perforation pattern, open area and material condition should be defined by the enclosure manufacturer.
Acoustic performance must be evaluated at the appropriate equipment or system level.
7. Weather Protection, Ventilation and Generator Safety
Enclosure material selection must be separated from complete generating-set safety and performance.
The design should consider ventilation, hot surfaces, access, fire risks, fuel handling, drainage and environmental exposure.
For certain newly manufactured generating sets, ISO 8528-13:2026 provides relevant safety requirements within its stated scope.
ISO 8528-10:2022 addresses measurement of airborne noise from specified generating sets.
Neither standard is a replacement for the steel sheet or structural plate purchasing specifications.
Similarly, the use of galvanized sheet or an acoustic liner does not independently establish an IP rating, noise limit, ventilation capacity or fire rating.
Technical reference: ISO 8528-13:2026 – Generating Set Safety.
Noise measurement reference: ISO 8528-10:2022.
8. Material Inspection and OEM Purchasing Requirements
Generator enclosure manufacturers should evaluate incoming steel against their approved material schedule.
Relevant checks can include:
- Verification of steel grade and product standard.
- Sheet thickness and dimensional tolerances.
- Coating mass and surface condition where specified.
- Forming suitability and representative sample trials.
- Edge condition after slitting or cutting.
- Material certificates and batch traceability.
- Protection during storage, fabrication and transport.
For coated components, the approved manufacturing process should also address any necessary treatment of damaged coatings or exposed edges.
Heating or welding galvanized materials requires appropriate occupational safety controls, including control of hazardous fumes.

10. Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is galvanized steel suitable for diesel generator canopies?
It can be suitable for selected exterior panels and other components when the coating, substrate and fabrication requirements are approved for the intended environment.
2. Can ASTM A653 be used for enclosure panels?
Yes, where the ordered galvanized sheet product falls within the specification and the correct substrate category and coating designation are selected.
3. Is galvanized sheet better than cold-rolled steel?
They are not directly interchangeable product descriptions. Galvanized sheet includes a metallic coating, while uncoated cold-rolled steel may require a separate protection system. Selection depends on the component requirements.
4. Can a G90 coating guarantee outdoor corrosion resistance for a fixed number of years?
No. Actual performance depends on environmental conditions, coating damage, further finishing and maintenance.
5. Does thicker steel automatically improve generator noise reduction?
No. Acoustic performance depends on the complete enclosure, including panel construction, openings, seals, absorbent materials and the generator noise source.
6. Are ventilation louvers manufactured from the same steel as canopy walls?
They may use the same product family, but louver forming and corrosion requirements can differ. The approved specification should identify each component separately.
7. Does an ASTM A36 certificate prove the generator base frame is safe?
No. It documents the applicable raw steel requirements, not the structural design or performance of the completed base frame.
