Carbon Steel Plate for Concrete Mixer Truck Drums: Shells, Spiral Blades & Discharge Chutes

Industrial Manufacturing Guide | November 3, 2026 | Carbon Steel Plate and Wear-Resistant Materials for Concrete Mixer OEMsA concrete mixer truck drum is exposed to repeated contact with aggregates, cement paste and other concrete constituents while rotating during transport and discharge.

For manufacturers, the steel requirements extend beyond the drum shell. Internal spiral blades, inlet components, discharge chutes and supporting structures perform different functions and experience different loading and wear conditions.

Hot-rolled carbon steel plate, high-strength structural steel and specialized abrasion-resistant plate may all be considered for selected components, subject to engineering approval.

This guide explains how to specify steel raw materials for concrete mixer drum manufacturing, with particular attention to abrasion, forming, welding, material standards and international purchasing.

1. Where Steel Is Used in Concrete Mixer Truck Manufacturing

A truck-mounted concrete mixer uses a rotating drum fitted with internal mixing elements to transport and discharge concrete.

Depending on the design, the drum may consist of several curved or conical shell sections joined into a complete assembly.

Internal helical blades move and mix the material as the drum rotates. Inlet and discharge components guide concrete into and out of the drum.

Typical steel-related components include:

  • Curved and conical drum shell sections.
  • Internal helical mixing blades.
  • Inlet hopper and transition components.
  • Discharge chutes and selected wear surfaces.
  • Mounting plates and support brackets.
  • Drawing-based replacement blanks.

Drum material specifications vary between manufacturers and models. Some designs also use proprietary wear-resistant steel, specialized liners or other materials.

Steel supplier SSAB and equipment manufacturer Putzmeister have publicly described the use of high-strength and abrasion-resistant steel in concrete mixer manufacturing.

Industry reference: SSAB and Putzmeister – Steel Applications in Concrete Mixers.

This industry example does not imply that JUDE supplies materials to either company.

2. Which Mixer Components Require Steel Plate?

The steel selection should begin with the actual function of each component.

Component Potential Material Form Main Purchasing Requirement
Drum shell Approved structural or specialized steel plate Grade, thickness, curvature, forming and welding
Spiral mixing blade Design-specified formed plate or wear-resistant steel Abrasion, spiral geometry, weldability and forming
Inlet hopper Approved sheet, plate or wear-protected material Impact, abrasion, geometry and connections
Discharge chute Specified formed sheet, plate or liner system Wear exposure, shape, surface and replacement
Support bracket Approved structural steel plate or profile Structural loads, holes and material standard
Replacement blank Drawing-based steel plate Part number, dimensions, grade and inspection

This table is an illustrative procurement framework. It is not the approved bill of materials of any particular concrete mixer truck.

3. Structural Carbon Steel vs Abrasion-Resistant Steel

Steel strength and abrasion resistance are different engineering properties.

A material with relatively high yield strength does not necessarily have the wear performance required for a mixer drum or internal blade.

Structural Carbon and HSLA Steel

Structural grades may be selected for components where mechanical strength, weldability, forming characteristics and dimensional requirements are important.

ASTM A572 Grade 50 and selected EN S355 grades are examples of structural steel designations that manufacturers may evaluate for approved applications.

However, neither grade should automatically be described as a dedicated abrasion-resistant steel.

Abrasion-Resistant Plate

Specialized wear-resistant plate may be selected where repeated aggregate contact creates significant abrasive wear.

Its suitability depends on the specified material characteristics, fabrication route and service conditions.

Relevant factors may include:

  • Material hardness and toughness.
  • Plate thickness and available dimensions.
  • Bending and forming capability.
  • Weldability and heat input limitations.
  • Expected abrasive and impact conditions.
  • Required inspection and material certification.

A hardness designation alone does not provide a guaranteed service life.

Through-Hardened Plate vs Hardfaced Overlay Plate

Through-hardened abrasion-resistant steel and hardfaced composite plate are different material products.

A through-hardened plate has a specified hardened steel structure, while a hardfaced plate includes a deposited wear-resistant layer on a supporting substrate.

The two materials can have different bending, welding and cutting limitations.

A hardfaced overlay plate should not automatically replace a formable steel plate in a curved drum shell or spiral blade.

Engineering note: The drum manufacturer must approve the steel grade and manufacturing process. Material selection should not be based solely on nominal strength, a wear-plate marketing name or a claimed abrasion multiplier.

4. ASTM and EN Steel Standards for Mixer Components

Steel product standards apply to particular material forms and requirements. They do not independently certify a completed concrete mixer drum.

Standard Relevant Scope Procurement Consideration
ASTM A572/A572M-25 Specified HSLA structural steel shapes, plates and bars Structural grade, properties and approved plate application
ASTM A1011/A1011M-25 Specified hot-rolled steel sheet and strip Applicable coils and cut-length products
ASTM A36/A36M-19 Carbon structural steel Selected approved brackets and structural components
ASTM A6/A6M General requirements for applicable structural steel products Dimensions, tolerances and relevant delivery conditions
EN 10025-2:2019 Specified hot-rolled non-alloy structural steel products Complete S355 grade, quality and delivery condition

ASTM A572 Grade 50

ASTM A572/A572M-25 specifies certain high-strength low-alloy structural steel products.

Grade 50 is a strength designation, not a guarantee of abrasion resistance, drum durability or forming performance.

Before selecting it for a manufactured component, the buyer must confirm the relevant product form, mechanical properties and approved fabrication requirements.

ASTM A572/A572M-25 – Official Specification

ASTM A1011 Hot-Rolled Sheet and Coil

ASTM A1011/A1011M-25 covers specified categories of hot-rolled sheet and strip in coil or cut-length form.

It should only be used where the ordered product falls within its scope and the approved material designation is applicable.

Hot-rolled coil can be a useful purchasing form for certain production processes, but suitability depends on the required finished component.

ASTM A1011/A1011M-25 – Official Specification

EN S355 Structural Grades

EN 10025-2 includes several structural steel grades and quality designations.

S355JR, S355J0 and S355J2 differ in specified impact-related requirements. The complete designation and delivery condition matter.

These designations should not be treated as automatic equivalents to ASTM A572 Grade 50.

The engineering specification must determine whether a particular grade is acceptable for a mixer component.

5. Drum Shell Rolling and Spiral Blade Forming

Concrete mixer drum manufacturing can involve cutting, rolling, bending, joining and welding steel sections into a complete rotating assembly.

Drum Shell Manufacturing

Approved steel plate may be cut into blanks and formed to the required shell geometry.

Manufacturing checks may include:

  • Starting plate thickness and material condition.
  • Developed blank dimensions.
  • Required rolling or forming radius.
  • Roundness and dimensional tolerances.
  • Welding and joint preparation.
  • Required inspections after fabrication.

Plate thickness alone does not establish the mechanical performance or operating life of a completed drum.

Spiral Blade Manufacturing

Internal mixing blades can require complex formed geometry rather than simple rectangular steel blanks.

The approved material should permit the required forming and joining processes.

For high-strength or wear-resistant steel, the fabricator must review the manufacturer’s technical data for bendability, cutting and welding.

Using a harder material without verifying its forming characteristics may introduce manufacturing difficulties.

Welding and Assembly

Welded drum assemblies require suitable procedures for the selected materials.

The welding process may affect local mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy and the condition of wear-resistant steel.

Where specified, production should include controlled welding procedures, dimensional examination and relevant nondestructive testing.

Rotating drum balance and operational performance must be verified by the equipment manufacturer.

6. Abrasion, Maintenance and Replacement Components

A mixer drum experiences repeated contact with aggregates and other concrete constituents.

Actual wear depends on the material being mixed, production volume, operating practice, component geometry and maintenance.

Internal spiral blades and discharge chutes may experience different wear conditions from the outer drum shell.

Therefore, a manufacturer should avoid assigning a single universal wear-life estimate to every component.

Replacement Blade Materials

When manufacturing replacement spiral blades, the purchaser should identify the original approved component drawing and material requirements.

Substituting a different steel grade or changing blade geometry may affect forming, joining, mass distribution and operating performance.

Any replacement must be approved by the responsible equipment designer.

Wear Protection and Maintenance

Some designs use particular abrasion-resistant materials or replaceable wear components.

Others rely on the selected drum and blade material itself.

The correct approach depends on the original equipment design and operating conditions.

Material supply does not independently establish the wear performance of the finished mixer assembly.

7. Steel Inspection and Material Traceability

Concrete mixer OEMs may purchase different grades of steel for the drum shell, spiral blades and mounting components.

Incoming inspection should therefore follow the approved material schedule.

Relevant checks may include:

  • Material grade and product standard.
  • Mill test certificate and heat identification.
  • Thickness and dimensional tolerances.
  • Mechanical properties required by the order.
  • Hardness and additional data for specified wear-resistant materials.
  • Surface condition and delivery state.
  • Inspection after cutting and forming.
  • Traceability requirements for processed blanks.

Where a wear-resistant plate is specified, its actual datasheet and certification should be reviewed. Different wear-plate types cannot be assumed equivalent merely because of a similar product name.

For supplier inspection information, see JUDE Steel Quality Control.

9. How to Request Steel for Concrete Mixer Manufacturing

For an accurate quotation, a mixer drum manufacturer should send a component-level material schedule rather than requesting generic “mild steel for concrete mixers.”

Recommended RFQ information:

  • Component name and manufacturing application.
  • Approved material grade and complete product standard.
  • Required plate or coil thickness and dimensions.
  • Material delivery condition and surface requirements.
  • Wear-resistant material datasheet, where applicable.
  • Forming, cutting and welding requirements.
  • Drawing number and revision.
  • Required material test certificates and inspection.
  • Order quantity and expected repeat demand.
  • Destination country, port and delivery terms.

Any alternative material proposal should identify the differences from the approved specification and be submitted for engineering approval before purchase.
