Galvanized Steel Coil for Spiral HVAC Duct Manufacturing: Lockseam Pipes, Elbows & Fittings

Industrial Manufacturing Guide | November 4, 2026 | Galvanized Carbon Steel Coil for HVAC Duct Fabricators

Spiral HVAC ducts are manufactured from formed metal strip joined along a continuous helical seam. Galvanized carbon steel is a common raw-material option for suitable ventilation applications because it combines formable steel sheet with a zinc-based protective coating.

For spiral duct manufacturers, however, purchasing galvanized coil involves more than specifying a nominal sheet thickness and coating designation.

Steel grade, strip width, coating condition, coil dimensions and forming behavior can affect production consistency. Elbows, reducers and connecting fittings may also require separate sheet-metal processing.

This guide explains the galvanized steel supply chain for spiral duct manufacturing and helps international OEM buyers prepare accurate material enquiries.

1. How Are Spiral HVAC Ducts Manufactured?

A spiral duct is commonly manufactured by feeding metal strip into a forming machine that winds the strip into a circular duct and mechanically interlocks its edges.

The resulting helical lockseam helps maintain the shape and stiffness of the duct.

Depending on the manufacturing equipment and duct specifications, production may involve:

  1. Purchasing suitable galvanized steel coil.
  2. Slitting the coil into the required strip widths.
  3. Feeding the strip into a spiral duct forming machine.
  4. Forming and mechanically closing the helical seam.
  5. Cutting the duct to the specified length.
  6. Checking diameter, seam condition and dimensions.
  7. Preparing the sections for connection and installation.

The forming process must be compatible with the steel grade, thickness and coating condition.

Spiral Manufacturing Co., Inc. describes this established production method and the use of galvanized steel for spiral ductwork.

2. Which Duct Components Require Galvanized Steel?

HVAC duct systems contain several component types. Their manufacturing requirements may differ even when they use the same coated-steel product family.

Component Potential Raw Material Purchasing Requirement
Straight spiral duct Galvanized steel strip from coil Grade, thickness, strip width and coating
Circular elbow Approved galvanized steel sheet Developed profile, bending and joining
Duct reducer Formable coated steel sheet Diameter transition and blank dimensions
Branch connection Specified galvanized sheet Cut profile, connection and sealing
Connector or sleeve Coated steel strip or formed sheet Diameter, fit and joint geometry
Mounting or support part Approved sheet, strip or structural stock Required strength, dimensions and corrosion protection

Not every elbow or fitting is produced by spiral forming. Some fittings are manufactured by cutting, pressing, rolling and joining separate sheet-metal blanks.

Other materials, including aluminum and stainless steel, may be required for certain HVAC or industrial air-handling applications.

This table is a general procurement guide, not a certified bill of materials for a specific ventilation system.

3. ASTM A653 Galvanized Steel: What Should Buyers Specify?

ASTM A653/A653M covers specified hot-dip zinc-coated and zinc-iron alloy-coated steel sheet in coils and cut lengths.

The specification includes several steel categories with different material requirements.

Steel Substrate Selection

Possible substrate designations include Commercial Steel (CS), Forming Steel (FS), Structural Steel (SS) and other specified categories.

These designations are not automatically interchangeable.

For duct components requiring repeated bending or mechanical seam formation, the manufacturer should choose a substrate with suitable formability based on the approved material specification and production trials.

Where specific mechanical strength is required, the purchasing documents must identify the appropriate grade and mandatory mechanical properties.

The zinc coating designation does not independently establish the steel substrate’s strength.

ASTM A924 General Requirements

ASTM A924/A924M provides general requirements for relevant continuously hot-dip metallic-coated steel sheet products.

These requirements address matters including applicable coating and material acceptance provisions.

The specific product standard and purchase order remain essential. ASTM A924 should not be used by itself as a replacement for ASTM A653.

4. Why Coil Width and Thickness Matter in Spiral Forming

The steel strip width must be compatible with the spiral duct forming machine and the intended duct geometry.

Different machines may require different strip widths or tooling arrangements.

Therefore, a coil supplier should not assume that one strip width works for all spiral duct production lines.

Strip Width

Slitting requirements should specify the nominal strip width, permitted tolerance and required edge condition.

Improper strip width or poor edge quality may create production or seam-forming difficulties.

Sheet Thickness

Sheet thickness affects forming behavior and contributes to the finished duct’s mechanical properties.

The duct manufacturer’s approved design determines the required material thickness, together with other factors such as diameter, pressure class, supports and seam construction.

Purchasers should clarify whether the specified dimension refers to the steel substrate thickness or the total coated thickness.

Thickness measurement and tolerances must follow the agreed product specification.

Coil Handling

For continuous production, buyers should also identify:

  • Coil inside diameter.
  • Maximum outside diameter.
  • Maximum permitted coil mass.
  • Required slit-coil width.
  • Packaging and handling requirements.
  • Required coil identification and traceability.

The manufacturer’s actual uncoiling and forming equipment determines the acceptable coil configuration.

5. Galvanized Coating and Spiral Lockseam Performance

Hot-dip galvanized steel has a zinc coating that provides corrosion protection to the steel substrate under suitable conditions.

However, forming and handling operations can affect the coating.

G90 and Z275

G90 and Z275 are commonly encountered galvanized steel coating mass designations.

They represent closely comparable coating mass levels when interpreted according to the applicable ASTM measurement systems.

The coating designation refers to the relevant combined coating mass on both sheet surfaces, rather than that full amount being present on each individual surface.

The coating designation does not determine the substrate strength, duct pressure rating or guaranteed corrosion-free service life.

Coating Damage During Forming

Spiral seam forming involves local deformation of the steel strip and its coating.

Forming behavior depends on the substrate grade, coating condition, tooling and forming operation.

Manufacturers should inspect representative production samples for unacceptable coating cracking, flaking or damage.

Cut Edges and Connections

Cutting galvanized sheet can expose steel at certain edges.

Nearby zinc may provide sacrificial protection under appropriate conditions, but exposed-edge performance depends on the environment and the coating system.

Where the approved duct specification requires additional edge or joint protection, the finishing process should be identified before production.

Procurement reminder: Galvanized coating mass is a raw-material specification. It should not be confused with the completed duct’s structural strength, air leakage performance or installation suitability.

6. Spiral Duct Standards: SMACNA and EN 1506

Material standards and completed duct construction standards have different purposes.

SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards

SMACNA publishes technical guidance for the fabrication and installation of metal and flexible HVAC ductwork.

The fourth edition of its HVAC Duct Construction Standards includes provisions relevant to spiral ductwork, fittings and supporting components.

For a project specifying SMACNA requirements, duct dimensions, material thickness, reinforcement, joints and supports must follow the applicable design and construction requirements.

Reference: SMACNA Technical Standards.

EN 1506: Circular Duct Dimensions

EN 1506 specifies dimensions for circular sheet-metal air ducts and fittings within its scope.

It does not by itself establish the required wall thickness or the complete duct’s strength and leakage performance.

Those requirements must be evaluated under the applicable project standards, including EN 12237 where relevant.

Reference: EN 1506 – Circular Duct Dimensions.

Compliance with ASTM A653 does not automatically demonstrate compliance with SMACNA construction provisions or EN duct performance requirements.

7. Common Manufacturing Problems Linked to Raw Material

1. Unstable Spiral Seam Formation

An unsuitable steel grade, strip width, thickness or machine setting may contribute to forming problems.

Manufacturers should verify representative materials with their intended equipment before mass production.

2. Coating Damage at Formed Edges

Localized coating damage may occur during aggressive bending or seam formation.

Inspect the finished seam and compare the results with the agreed acceptance requirements.

3. Poor Fit Between Ducts and Fittings

Duct diameter, connector dimensions and manufacturing tolerances influence assembly fit.

The sheet supplier’s thickness certificate does not establish the dimensional conformity of a finished elbow or connector.

4. Corrosion After Installation

Condensation, outdoor moisture and chemical contaminants may affect galvanized ductwork.

The corrosion protection system must be suitable for the actual operating environment.

5. Confusing Material Certification with Leakage Testing

A material test certificate documents the specified raw-material characteristics.

It does not establish the airtightness or operating performance of an assembled duct system.

10. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What steel is commonly used for spiral HVAC ducts?

Hot-dip galvanized carbon steel sheet is a common option for suitable ductwork. The exact grade, thickness and coating depend on the approved design and intended environment.

2. Is ASTM A653 suitable for spiral duct manufacturing?

It can be used to specify appropriate galvanized steel sheet products. The purchaser must select the correct substrate designation, coating and dimensions for the forming process.

3. Is G90 equivalent to a steel strength grade?

No. G90 is a zinc coating mass designation, not a steel strength designation.

4. Can any galvanized steel coil be spiral-formed?

No. The substrate’s forming characteristics, thickness, coating condition and machine capabilities must be compatible with the required process.

5. Do spiral ducts and elbows use the same steel width?

Not necessarily. Straight spiral ducts and separately fabricated fittings may require different strip widths, flat blanks or manufacturing processes.

6. Does ASTM A653 guarantee a finished duct’s airtightness?

No. Air leakage and completed-system performance must be assessed separately under the applicable duct design, fabrication and testing requirements.

7. Can galvanized steel ducts be installed outdoors?

They may be used where the approved corrosion-protection system is suitable for the actual exposure. A coating designation alone does not guarantee a fixed outdoor service life.
