Carbon Steel for Truck Weighbridge Manufacturing: Deck Plates, Support Beams & Mounting Components

Industrial Manufacturing Guide | November 6, 2026 | Carbon Steel Plate and Structural Products for Truck Scale OEMs

Truck weighbridges are used to measure the weight of road vehicles in logistics facilities, industrial plants, agricultural operations and other commercial weighing applications.

For manufacturers of steel-deck truck scales, carbon steel plate and structural sections are important raw materials used in platform decks, longitudinal beams, crossmembers and mounting components.

However, selecting steel for a weighbridge requires more than specifying a nominal plate thickness.

Material strength, component geometry, welding, repeated vehicle loading and environmental exposure must be considered in the approved design.

This guide explains how structural carbon steel enters weighbridge manufacturing and what international equipment OEMs should include when requesting steel quotations.

1. What Is a Steel-Deck Truck Weighbridge?

A truck weighbridge is a weighing platform designed to measure vehicles under specified operating conditions.

A typical static truck scale may include a load-bearing deck, structural supports, load cells, an indicating system and an engineered foundation.

Weighbridge platforms may use steel-deck, concrete-deck or other approved structural arrangements.

Steel-deck systems can incorporate welded structural beams and deck plates assembled into transportable modules.

Major weighing equipment manufacturers, including METTLER TOLEDO, offer truck scale designs with different deck constructions.

These manufacturing examples demonstrate established equipment applications. They do not imply that JUDE supplies products to the referenced manufacturer.

2. Which Weighbridge Components Use Carbon Steel?

Different components of a steel weighbridge require different material forms and acceptance requirements.

Component Potential Raw Material Key Purchasing Requirement
Deck surface plate Approved structural carbon steel plate Grade, thickness, dimensions and surface requirements
Longitudinal support beam Specified structural steel beam or fabricated plate girder Section geometry, strength and structural design
Crossmember Approved structural section or fabricated plate Dimensions, connection details and material standard
Deck end plate Structural carbon steel plate Cut profile, thickness and welding requirements
Load-cell mounting component Design-specified steel plate or machined component stock Drawing, material grade, geometry and tolerances
Reinforcement plate Approved structural steel plate Grade, dimensions, position and joining details
Access or maintenance cover Specified sheet or plate Dimensions, surface and attachment requirements

This table is an illustrative raw-material schedule rather than a certified bill of materials for a particular truck scale.

Load cells, weighing indicators and electronic components are separate specialized products and cannot be specified only through a structural steel purchase order.

3. ASTM A36 Carbon Steel Plate for Weighbridge Components

ASTM A36/A36M-19 covers carbon structural steel shapes, plates and bars within its specified scope.

It may be considered for selected weighbridge plates and structural components when approved by the equipment designer.

Potential uses can include:

  • Specified deck and connection plates.
  • Structural mounting and reinforcement plates.
  • Selected end plates and support components.

However, ASTM A36 is not automatically suitable for every truck scale design.

Plate thickness, mechanical properties, welded connections and repeated loading must satisfy the applicable structural requirements.

Official standard: ASTM A36/A36M-19 – Carbon Structural Steel.

4. ASTM A572 Grade 50: When Is Higher Strength Relevant?

ASTM A572/A572M-25 specifies several grades of high-strength low-alloy structural steel.

Grade 50 is a common structural designation that may be evaluated for components requiring particular strength characteristics.

For selected beams or plate components, higher-strength steel may provide an engineering design option.

However, using ASTM A572 Grade 50 does not automatically allow a thinner deck plate or increase the completed weighbridge’s rated capacity.

The equipment designer must evaluate stiffness, deflection, fatigue, welds, local loading and overall structural behavior.

ASTM A36 and ASTM A572 Grade 50 should not be substituted for each other without approval.

Official standard: ASTM A572/A572M-25 – HSLA Structural Steel.

5. Does a Truck Weighbridge Need Checkered Steel Plate?

Some steel-deck weighing platforms use raised-pattern floor plate or another approved traction surface.

Such surfaces may be considered where vehicle traction and maintenance access are relevant.

ASTM A786/A786M-15(2025) covers specified hot-rolled steel floor plate products with raised patterns.

However, patterned floor plate is not the same product as ordinary flat structural plate.

The purchase order should establish the required material, product standard, thickness basis, plate dimensions and surface pattern.

A raised pattern alone does not guarantee slip resistance under every wet, oily or contaminated condition.

Similarly, the existence of a patterned surface does not establish the platform’s structural load rating.

Official reference: ASTM A786/A786M-15(2025) – Steel Floor Plate.

Engineering distinction: Structural plate strength, deck surface traction and weighing accuracy are different requirements. They must be evaluated under the relevant material, structural and weighing equipment specifications.

6. Weighbridge Steel Fabrication Requirements

Manufacturers of steel-deck truck scales may cut, drill, weld and assemble steel plates and structural beams into load-bearing modules.

Deck Plate Cutting and Preparation

The starting plate dimensions should be based on approved manufacturing drawings.

Relevant purchasing requirements may include plate thickness, cut size, allowable deviation, edge preparation and surface condition.

Support Beam Manufacturing

Longitudinal beams and crossmembers carry vehicle loads through the weighing platform.

The required beam type, size, spacing and connection arrangement must be determined by the structural design.

Fabricated plate girders and rolled structural sections may have different manufacturing and inspection requirements.

Welding and Dimensional Inspection

Welded connections require suitable procedures for the approved material grade and component application.

After fabrication, relevant inspection may include:

  • Overall platform dimensions.
  • Beam and deck alignment.
  • Weld inspection according to the project specification.
  • Flatness and dimensional tolerances.
  • Mounting surface geometry.
  • Required protective coating condition.

The responsible equipment manufacturer must also verify the performance of the completed platform and weighing system.

7. Corrosion Protection for Outdoor Truck Scales

Many truck weighbridges operate in outdoor industrial environments.

Moisture, road salts, dirt accumulation and other environmental factors can affect steel surfaces and connections.

Depending on the project, corrosion protection may involve blast cleaning, an approved paint system, galvanizing or another specified method.

However, not every steel-deck component is suitable for the same finishing process.

Manufacturers should consider coating compatibility, access for maintenance and any dimensional consequences of surface treatment.

A material grade or coating specification alone does not guarantee a fixed service life.

8. Structural Steel Standards vs Weighing Certification

Structural steel conformity and commercial weighing compliance are different matters.

ASTM A36, ASTM A572 and applicable general requirements such as ASTM A6 address steel material products.

They do not independently establish the accuracy or legal approval of a complete truck scale.

For example, the 2026 edition of NIST Handbook 44 provides relevant requirements for commercial weighing and measuring equipment in jurisdictions where it is adopted.

OIML R 76 addresses non-automatic weighing instruments within its scope.

Applicable requirements depend on the intended market, equipment type and local regulatory framework.

Official references:

Supplying certified steel plate does not establish that the finished truck scale meets its required weighing accuracy, load rating or legal metrology requirements.

9. Material Inspection and Traceability

Weighbridge OEMs may purchase steel plate and structural sections from multiple production batches.

Incoming inspection should follow the approved material schedule.

Relevant checks include:

  • Material grade and product standard.
  • Required chemical and mechanical test results.
  • Mill test certificate and heat identification.
  • Plate thickness and dimensional tolerances.
  • Structural section dimensions.
  • Surface condition and visible defects.
  • Required supplementary testing.
  • Traceability after cutting and fabrication.

For applicable rolled structural products, ASTM A6/A6M-26a provides relevant general requirements.

Buyers should specify any required additional testing and inspection documentation before order confirmation.

Where component fabrication is requested, the buyer should clarify whether the quotation covers raw stock, cut blanks or completed structural assemblies.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What steel is used for truck weighbridge decks?

Steel-deck truck scales may use approved structural carbon steel plates, beams and other fabricated components. The exact grades and dimensions depend on the manufacturer’s design.

2. Is ASTM A36 suitable for weighbridge deck plates?

It may be suitable for selected components when the approved design permits its use. The standard does not independently establish the completed platform’s structural capacity.

3. Is ASTM A572 Grade 50 always better than A36?

No. Higher nominal strength does not automatically improve every design. Stiffness, fatigue, fabrication and project requirements must also be considered.

4. Can checkered steel plate be used for a truck scale platform?

It may be used where the design specifies an appropriate patterned floor plate. Surface traction and structural performance still require separate evaluation.

5. Can EN S355 replace ASTM A572 Grade 50?

Not automatically. Applicable product standards, mechanical properties, impact requirements, delivery condition and engineering approval must be reviewed.
