Steel for Hydraulic Cylinder Manufacturing: Barrel Tubes, Piston Rods and End-Cap Materials

Industrial Application Guide | Carbon Steel Mechanical Tubing, Round Bars and Plate Materials for Hydraulic Cylinder OEMs

A hydraulic cylinder manufacturer may purchase several types of steel for one finished assembly. The cylinder barrel requires a suitable tube that can be machined to the specified internal geometry. The piston rod needs material with the required strength, straightness and surface-finishing capability. End caps, pistons and mounting connections require separately approved bar, plate or forging stock.

These materials may all belong to the carbon or alloy steel supply chain, but they are not interchangeable. A general-purpose pipe, a hot-rolled round bar and a structural plate are manufactured and certified under different requirements.

For purchasing departments, the challenge is to match each raw material to its downstream machining process and the cylinder manufacturer’s approved design.

This guide explains the relationship between seamless mechanical tubing, 1045 carbon steel round bars, plate blanks and hydraulic cylinder component manufacturing. It also covers relevant ASTM and EN specifications, inspection considerations and the information required for an accurate OEM material quotation.

1. How Steel Enters the Hydraulic Cylinder Manufacturing Supply Chain

Hydraulic cylinders convert pressurized hydraulic fluid into linear mechanical force and movement. They are used in selected construction equipment, agricultural machinery, industrial automation, material-handling systems and other engineered machines.

The required materials depend on the cylinder design, hydraulic pressure, loading direction, stroke, operating environment and manufacturing process.

A typical supply chain may include:

  1. Engineering approval of the cylinder assembly and component drawings.
  2. Selection of tube, bar, plate and forging specifications.
  3. Procurement of suitable steel raw materials.
  4. Cutting and preparing the required material blanks.
  5. Machining or finishing the cylinder barrel bore.
  6. Machining and preparing the piston rod.
  7. Producing pistons, end caps and mounting components.
  8. Completing approved joining and assembly operations.
  9. Installing compatible seals, bearings and other purchased components.
  10. Performing specified dimensional, functional and acceptance tests.

Not every manufacturer performs every operation internally. Some purchase finished honed tubes or precision rod stock, while others purchase steel raw materials and complete machining through their own production facilities.

The quotation must state clearly which stage of the supply chain the steel supplier is responsible for.

2. Which Steel Products Are Used in Hydraulic Cylinder Components?

A hydraulic cylinder contains components with different mechanical functions. Material selection should follow the relevant part drawing rather than a single general steel grade for the entire assembly.

Cylinder Component Possible Steel Starting Material Main Manufacturing Concern
Cylinder barrel Approved seamless or welded mechanical tubing Bore geometry, wall thickness, machining allowance and pressure loading
Piston rod Specified carbon or alloy steel round bar Strength, straightness, fatigue, surface finish and coating
Piston Approved bar, forging or other stock Machining, seal interfaces, loads and fit
Head or gland component Specified round bar, forging or machined blank Seal grooves, alignment and load transmission
End cap Approved plate, forging or bar stock Pressure-boundary design, welding and connection requirements
Rod eye or clevis Design-approved bar, plate or forging Pin-hole geometry, fatigue and bearing loads
Mounting bracket Specified structural plate or formed stock Connection geometry, loads and weld requirements
Reinforcement plate Approved carbon or structural steel plate Thickness, hole locations and structural loading

The table represents possible material supply routes. It is not a complete bill of materials for any particular hydraulic cylinder.

Seals, wear rings, bearings and some other components may use non-metallic or non-carbon-steel materials and require separate specifications.

3. Seamless Steel Tubes for Hydraulic Cylinder Barrels

The cylinder barrel is an important pressure-containing part of many hydraulic cylinder designs. Its internal surface interacts with the piston seals and must satisfy the specified geometry and surface requirements.

The tube selection should account for both the steel material and the intended final machining process.

Why Mechanical Tubing Specifications Matter

Some hydraulic cylinder barrels are manufactured from seamless carbon or alloy steel mechanical tubing. Other approved designs may use welded tubing or specially processed precision tubes.

The appropriate route is determined by the equipment designer and the manufacturer.

ASTM A519/A519M covers specified grades of seamless carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing. The specification addresses the tube product rather than the finished hydraulic cylinder.

An ASTM A519-compliant tube does not automatically satisfy a customer’s required final bore tolerance, surface roughness or cylinder pressure rating.

The buyer must separately define the product grade, manufacturing condition, dimensions and any additional inspection requirements.

Official reference: ASTM A519/A519M-24a — Seamless Carbon and Alloy Steel Mechanical Tubing.

Tube Outside Diameter, Inside Diameter and Wall Thickness

For cylinder barrels, buyers should not rely only on a nominal outside diameter and a general tube description.

The purchasing documents may need to identify:

  • Specified steel grade and product standard.
  • Seamless or approved welded manufacturing route.
  • Outside diameter and applicable tolerance.
  • Inside diameter or wall thickness and applicable tolerance.
  • Cut length and length tolerance.
  • Required delivery or heat-treatment condition.
  • Permitted ovality, straightness and wall eccentricity.
  • Required machining allowance for the final bore.
  • Material testing and inspection documentation.
  • Surface and packaging requirements.

If a tube will be honed or otherwise internally finished, the initial dimensions must leave sufficient stock for the specified manufacturing operation.

The machining allowance should come from the approved process plan. It cannot be assumed from the material grade alone.

From Raw Tube to Finished Cylinder Bore

Depending on the manufacturing route, the barrel may undergo cutting, boring, honing, skiving, roller burnishing or other finishing processes.

These operations can affect the final inside diameter, surface condition and geometric accuracy.

Surface requirements may include specified roughness parameters, waviness, dimensional tolerances and measurement methods.

However, a raw tube material certificate does not independently guarantee the finished surface of a honed or burnished cylinder barrel.

Manufacturers purchasing tube stock should identify whether the quotation is for unfinished mechanical tubing, pre-machined tubing or a finished precision bore.

JUDE publishes a Carbon and Alloy Steel Pipe and Tube product category. The availability of ASTM A519 mechanical tubing, exact grades, precision-bore processing and final tolerances must be confirmed separately.

4. ASTM A519, ASTM A513 and EN 10305-1: What Is the Difference?

Mechanical tubes are purchased under different specifications according to their manufacturing routes and required product characteristics.

Standard General Product Scope Purchasing Consideration
ASTM A519/A519M Seamless carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing Confirm grade, size, supply condition, tests and finishing allowance
ASTM A513/A513M Electric-resistance-welded carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing Confirm the permitted welded route and any supplementary requirements
EN 10305-1 Seamless cold-drawn steel tubes for precision applications Identify the complete steel designation, delivery condition and precision requirements

These specifications have different scopes. They should not be treated as automatically interchangeable simply because the offered tubing has similar nominal dimensions.

For EN 10305-1 orders, buyers should specify the applicable edition, complete tube designation and required delivery condition. A precision tube standard is not a complete hydraulic-cylinder design approval.

EN 10305-4 has a different scope involving seamless cold-drawn tubes for hydraulic and pneumatic power systems. It should not be treated as an automatic substitute for every cylinder-barrel specification.

Where the buyer requires a particular precision tube grade, the quotation should identify that full designation rather than referring only to “European hydraulic tube.”

5. 1045 Carbon Steel Round Bars for Piston Rod Manufacturing

A piston rod transmits force between the hydraulic piston and the external load. Depending on the application, it may experience tension, compression, bending, repeated loading and surface contact with rod seals and bearings.

Some piston rods are manufactured from suitable medium-carbon steel bar, including SAE/AISI 1045 where approved by the design.

Other applications require different carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels or specially processed rod materials.

What Does 1045 Identify?

SAE/AISI 1045 is a medium-carbon steel grade commonly associated with applications requiring a balance of mechanical strength, machinability and potential heat-treatment response.

However, the designation does not by itself identify a finished rod’s hardness, straightness, surface condition or strength in a particular delivery state.

Those properties depend on the product specification, material processing and subsequent manufacturing operations.

ASTM A576-25 covers specified hot-wrought special-quality carbon steel bars. If it is selected for the raw material, the purchasing documents must identify the applicable grade and any required supplementary conditions.

Official reference: ASTM A576-25 — Hot-Wrought Special-Quality Carbon Steel Bars.

1045 vs C45: Verify the Full Specification

SAE/AISI 1045 and EN C45 designations may be discussed together in international supply chains, but they are not automatically identical specifications.

The applicable chemical composition, product form, supply condition, mechanical properties and inspection requirements must be checked against the approved standard.

Changing from one designation or supply standard to another requires technical approval where the purchased component has an approved engineering specification.

JUDE lists AISI/SAE 1045 and C45 Round Steel Bar among its products. Buyers should use the governing material standard and actual test certificates to confirm the ordered properties.

6. Piston Rod Machining, Hardening and Surface Protection

Producing a finished piston rod may involve turning, centerless grinding, polishing, heat treatment, surface hardening and coating, depending on the cylinder design.

Some commercial hydraulic rods use hard-chrome-plated surfaces or other engineered surface treatments.

These finishing processes must not be confused with the underlying steel bar specification.

Surface Finish and Seal Compatibility

A piston rod moves through sealing elements, so its final surface is important for operation and wear behavior.

Specifications may address:

  • Finished rod diameter and tolerance.
  • Straightness and runout.
  • Required base-metal condition.
  • Surface hardness and hardened depth where applicable.
  • Coating type and thickness.
  • Surface roughness and measurement method.
  • Surface defects and coating integrity.
  • Corrosion resistance required by the operating environment.

No single roughness or hardness value is appropriate for every hydraulic rod. Acceptance criteria must follow the manufacturer’s approved drawings and seal-system requirements.

Why Corrosion Protection Matters

Hydraulic cylinders may be exposed to water, dirt, humidity, chemicals or outdoor conditions.

Rust or coating damage on a piston rod may affect sealing and component performance.

The required protective treatment should reflect the operating environment, maintenance practices and approved equipment specification.

A steel bar delivered in a hot-rolled or ground condition should not be described as corrosion-protected finished piston rod stock unless the required treatment has actually been performed and verified.

7. Carbon Steel Plate and Bar for End Caps, Pistons and Mounting Parts

Hydraulic cylinder components are not manufactured entirely from tubes and piston rod bars.

End caps, mounting brackets, gland bodies and other machined components may also require plate, bar or forging stock.

The approved design determines the required material.

End Caps and Pressure-Boundary Components

An end cap may form part of the pressure boundary, depending on the cylinder arrangement.

Its material must be selected for the actual pressure, mechanical loads, attachment method and applicable design requirements.

For certain designs, the raw material may be a specified steel forging or suitably approved plate or bar stock.

A general structural plate grade should not be assumed suitable for a pressure-containing end cap without engineering evaluation.

The product standard, material condition, mechanical properties and inspection requirements must be consistent with the approved component design.

Mounting Plates and Clevis Components

Mounting parts transfer cylinder forces into the surrounding machine structure.

Their material selection may involve tensile loading, bending, bearing stresses, fatigue and the geometry of pins and welded connections.

For plate-based components, buyers should identify:

  • Approved structural or component material grade.
  • Material product standard and edition.
  • Plate thickness and starting dimensions.
  • Required cutting and machining allowances.
  • Hole geometry and connection details.
  • Required inspection and certification.

Explore JUDE Carbon and Alloy Steel Plate and Carbon and Alloy Steel Bar for relevant raw-material categories.

Exact grades and processing services should be confirmed against the component drawings before ordering.

8. Why Raw Material Certification Is Not Finished Cylinder Certification

For a hydraulic cylinder manufacturer, raw-material conformity is one part of a larger quality system.

A tube certificate can document specified properties of the tube product. A bar certificate can identify the supplied bar grade and test results under the applicable standard.

Neither certificate independently verifies the complete hydraulic cylinder’s performance.

A completed cylinder may require the manufacturer’s approved acceptance and functional testing, including testing for the appropriate pressure and operating conditions.

ISO 10100:2020 addresses acceptance tests for hydraulic fluid power cylinders.

Official reference: ISO 10100:2020 — Hydraulic Fluid Power Cylinders: Acceptance Tests.

The material supplier should not claim that delivery of a steel tube or bar establishes finished-cylinder acceptance under ISO 10100.

Technical distinction: A steel product specification controls the applicable raw-material requirements. Cylinder design, pressure rating, seal integrity, fatigue resistance and functional acceptance involve additional engineering and manufacturing responsibilities.

9. What Should Be Inspected Before Steel Is Released for Machining?

Material errors are often more difficult to correct after tubing has been bored or rod stock has been machined.

For hydraulic cylinder production, buyers can establish a receiving inspection plan that reflects the critical characteristics of each material.

Mechanical Tube Inspection

  • Correct grade and product standard.
  • Heat or batch traceability.
  • Outside diameter and wall thickness.
  • Inside diameter and available machining stock.
  • Length, straightness and relevant geometric tolerances.
  • Surface condition and applicable defect limits.
  • Specified mechanical testing or nondestructive examination.
  • Required delivery and heat-treatment condition.

Round Bar Inspection

  • Correct carbon or alloy steel grade.
  • Applicable bar product standard.
  • Diameter, length and straightness.
  • Heat-treatment and delivery condition.
  • Required chemical and mechanical test results.
  • Surface condition and machining allowance.
  • Material marking and traceability.

Plate and Blank Inspection

  • Approved material grade and product specification.
  • Thickness and dimensional tolerance.
  • Flatness and visible surface condition.
  • Cut dimensions and edge requirements.
  • Required mechanical testing.
  • Identification transferred to cut blanks.

Positive material identification or additional inspection may be required for particular orders. The inspection method must be appropriate for the elements or properties being verified.

10. Common Purchasing Problems in Hydraulic Cylinder Steel Supply

Problem 1: Ordering General-Purpose Pipe for a Precision Cylinder Barrel

Some pipe specifications address pressure piping, boiler service or other uses rather than the mechanical-tubing requirements of the cylinder manufacturer.

For example, ASTM A106 pipe should not automatically be accepted as ASTM A519 mechanical tubing.

The buyer must compare the full product specification, mechanical requirements, dimensions, finishing allowances and approval requirements before considering a substitution.

Problem 2: Buying 1045 Bar Without a Delivery Condition

The name 1045 alone does not establish final hardness, straightness or machinability for a particular production operation.

The order should state the applicable product standard, diameter, material condition and relevant inspection criteria.

Problem 3: Confusing Ground Rod Stock With Finished Plated Rods

Ground bar stock and surface-treated piston rod stock are not necessarily the same commercial product.

The quotation should distinguish base-metal supply, machining, hardening, coating and final surface inspection.

Problem 4: Insufficient Bore Machining Allowance

If the initial tube dimensions do not provide sufficient stock for the planned machining process, the finished bore may fail to meet the approved geometry.

Tube size selection should therefore be coordinated with the machining department before material purchase.

Problem 5: Incomplete Material Traceability

Cutting multiple steel bars or tubes into shorter blanks can create identification problems if the original heat or batch marking is lost.

The buyer should define an appropriate identification-transfer process where traceability is required by the contract.

11. Illustrative Material BOM for Hydraulic Cylinder OEMs

The following table is an example purchasing structure. It is not the approved material schedule of a specific hydraulic cylinder model.

Item Component Potential Raw Material Essential RFQ Data

14. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What steel is used for hydraulic cylinder barrels?

Some cylinder barrels are produced from approved seamless or welded mechanical tubing. The steel grade, tube specification, dimensions and manufacturing route depend on the cylinder design and required finished bore properties.

2. Is ASTM A519 suitable for hydraulic cylinder manufacturing?

ASTM A519/A519M may be an applicable raw-material specification for certain seamless mechanical tubes. It does not independently establish the finished bore tolerances, surface finish or pressure rating of a completed hydraulic cylinder.

3. Can ASTM A106 pipe replace ASTM A519 mechanical tubing?

Not automatically. The standards have different scopes. A substitution requires comparison of the complete requirements and approval from the responsible equipment engineer.

4. Is EN 10305-1 the same as ASTM A519?

No automatic equivalence should be assumed. Both may be relevant to mechanical or precision tube purchasing, but the grades, delivery conditions, dimensional requirements and inspection criteria must be reviewed individually.

5. Is 1045 carbon steel suitable for every hydraulic piston rod?

No. Some approved piston rod designs may use 1045 steel, while others require alloy steels, stainless steels or specially processed rod materials. The design must account for mechanical loading, surface protection, fatigue and operating conditions.

6. Does a 1045 round bar arrive with a finished chrome-plated surface?

Not unless that exact product and finishing scope are specified and confirmed. Ordinary 1045 bar stock and finished chrome-plated piston rod stock are different purchasing descriptions.

7. Does a seamless tube always have the correct surface finish for hydraulic seals?

No. A seamless tube can require additional internal machining and finishing. Final surface specifications and acceptance depend on the approved manufacturing process.

8. Can structural steel plate be used for a hydraulic end cap?

Only if the approved design and applicable requirements permit the selected plate material. Pressure-boundary design and component qualification cannot be established from a general structural plate designation alone.

9. What certificates should be requested for hydraulic cylinder steel?

The buyer should request the material certificates and test records required by the applicable product standards and contract. Supplementary mechanical testing, dimensional inspection or nondestructive examination may also be specified.

10. Does ISO 10100 apply to raw steel tubes and bars?

ISO 10100 addresses hydraulic cylinder acceptance tests. It is not a substitute for the raw-material product specifications governing steel tubes and bars.

11. Can JUDE supply material for cylinder barrels and piston rods?

JUDE lists carbon and alloy steel tube and bar product categories, including a 1045 round-bar product. Buyers can submit the complete material specifications for supply feasibility review.
